It's SNOWING!!!

Listening to: Jet - Stand Up
IT'S SNOWING OUTSIDE!!! I walked out and to my surprise, light, fluffy flurries were sweeping down out of the sky. It wasn't cold enough for the snow to stick but it was fun to see it coming down. I walked up a couple of blocks and felt the snow blowing past me. I stopped at the intersection and watched it through the street lights. It was soooo cool!!!! Man, I can't wait until there's a big storm and the snow piles up on the ground outside. I want to see that white blanket covering the city. In the meantime, I took a couple of pictures with my small digital camera (I didn't want to bring the big one out into the wet snow). You can look at them on my flickr page but I've also included a few below for your viewing pleasure.

As for the weekend, Michelle and I didn't do a whole lot but it was really nice to see her again. It was extremely cold on Friday night so we decided not to brave the wind chill. We stayed in and watched "This Film is Not Yet Rated." We both really enjoyed it. Check out the review here. On Saturday morning, I made waffles for breakfast which I've captured below.

After we stuffed ourselves with yummy waffles, we ventured out into the city to do some shopping. We took our chances at getting lottery seats for Avenue Q but no dice. It's not going to stop us from trying though...next weekend! Instead of the play, we ate at Spanky's BBQ in Times Square and went to a comedy show at UCB. It was a nice full night of entertainment and good eatin'!

...and here are some more pictures from the weekend. Check out the rest on my flickr page.

Trip to Austin

Listening to: My electric guitar
It feels so strange coming back to New York this time. It's different than the other times I've returned and I'm not sure why. Coincidentally, it was weird leaving New York as well. I left early Thursday morning out of Newark. A car was waiting for me at 5:45 when the city was still asleep. We crossed over the George Washington Bridge and there was a strange sight down the river...black. The city wasn't exploding with lights like usual. It was dark and kind of eerie, which definitely gave me the tingles. I was in Austin for the last part of the week helping out with recruiting and I felt it was a very successful trip. I have more experience than the last time I went (in September) so I could answer people's questions better and give them more examples of what I do. It was nice knowing I was making a difference and hopefully getting more people to sign up for interviews.

*moving to my couch since it's really cold by the window!*

I got distracted by a new version of Guitar Rig that I had to play with. So back to the weekend...Friday night I went out with Giulio, Andrea and her friends to Trudy's. I ordered a tasty stuffed avocado with suiza sauce and a Mexican martini. Mmmmmm. It had been awhile since I had tex-mex and it was delicious! I had a great time catching up with Giulio and Andrea and their friend Phillip. We had a lot of fun that night.

The next day I hung around Austin, wandering around trying to find all of the Gibson guitar statues. I found about 7 or 8 of them but there are 50 of them. Check out the story here Afterwards, I walked up to UT and hung around the campus for a bit. It was really odd being there during the day when all the students were getting their books for the start of a new semester. Soon after, Michael arrived in Austin and we headed off to one of my favorite BBQ spots, Rudy's. The meat and sauce was so juicy and filled with flavor...oh man...I promised Michelle that if I ate at Rudy's I would get a bottle of BBQ sauce so we could try to replicate the tasty meal, so that's what I did. It gave me some trouble (more on that later) but it was well worth it!

After lunch Michael and I grabbed a Mozart's Mocha Special at Mozart's on lake Austin. I love that place and it felt so homey to go back there. When we finished our coffee we headed over to book people and waterloo to look around. Michael was looking for a new book on the history of UT and I was tempted to buy Mole People but remembered that I brought a book for the plane. However, when I asked if they had the book, the person at the info desk told me there was a great documentary on the same topic (people living under NY). He said it was called Dark Days and that DJ Shadow wrote the soundtrack for the movie. Michael and I were both very intrigued and went over to waterloo video to check it out. Unfortunately they only had it for rent but I'm going to try to find it at blockbuster or order it from netflix.

That evening we met up with Giulio and jammed at his place. Giulio has progressed so much with guitar and music composition. It's great to sit and listen to some of the stuff he has created. I'm amazed by his work and keep encouraging him to write more! So c'mon Giulio, dooo it, dooo it. We had pretty open plans for the night and we decided to meet up with andrea, her friends and jessica at the clay pit for some dinner and drinks. We got a private room for 5 but the place was HUGE! We felt like royalty because the room was so secluded and had the feeling of a castle with stone walls and dim lighting. The food was good but I was anxious to get some beers from the ginger man which was our next destination. We parted ways after the clay pit and the three of us (michael, giulio and myself) went to the ginger man with a quick stopover at an irish pub to down an irish car bomb. Neither Michael or Giulio had tried this tasty drink before so it was my honor to present them with a half glass of guiness and a shot of Jameson with bailey's on top. Mmmm, so good! We had a great night catching up and drinking some pints, none of which were US brews. We like our foreign beers. :)

It was sad to leave today, I wish I could've stayed another day but it just didn't work out for Giulio since he has to work this weekend. I was kind of bummed that we didn't go to Juan in a Million but I'll just have to save that for the next trip. When I got to the airport and checked in the security person notified me that I had been selected for extra screening. That sucked because I didn't realize that BBQ sauce was illegal to carry-on since it was more than 18oz...completely slipped my mind! They gave me the option of going back out, checking my bag and then coming through security again. I thought about it for a moment and almost said "screw it, just toss the sauce" but the line wasn't long and I had a little bit of time so I saved the Rudy's sauce by checking my bag. I got to the gate with just a few minutes to spare in which I was called to the desk and upgraded to first class...SWEET!

I think that's a pretty good weekend update but of course no update is complete without a picture of a guy in spraying a plane with deicing fluid. It looks like something out of star wars or a sci-fi movie. He's in this little cockpit that moves up and down shooting out a stream of deicing fluid. It was pretty entertaining to watch during my layover in Chicago.

Merle Goes to Work

Listening to: John Mayer - Gravity
I forgot to add one crucial bit about the weekend...the drawing. My sister and I came up with an idea of posting a picture on the stairwell so everyday I would have something to make me chuckle. Thanks to my sister, 'Merle Goes to Work' was born...

Weekend With Ahna

Listening to: Jason Mraz - Song for a Friend
I had a great weekend with my sister. I'm still recovering from all the walking we did and I'm actually not in that much of a writing mood due to an extreme case of lazy Sundays. But, I will still give a little synopsis of the time spent with my sister and her boyfriend Paul. We did lots of fun stuff and lots of exploring which is the most fun for me. Once I can't explore anymore in a city I get kind of bored but considering how big NY is, I don't think boredom will come anytime soon. I haven't even touched the other boroughs yet... Anyways, we went to the Upright Citizens Brigade, which is a comedy club in Chelsea. I've been there once before and loved it and wasn't disappointed again. The improv show was absolutely hilarious!! Today my sister and I made a great brunch at my apartment and then met Paul. We set out across the West, Greenwich and finally arrived in the east village, a place I had never explored before. It was a cool part of town but we didn't get a whole lot of time there. We rested at a nice coffee shop and ate pizza at a local pizza place, both were great!

The weekend seemed way to short but I'm so glad my sister could make it down. I'm not really sure when I will see her next since she is moving back to San Diego. Her time in Massachusetts is up and she's off to explore another region and another culture, wherever that may be.

Tonight, I set out to take some night shots with my new camera. Even though I'm still unsure about all the features, I have a better grasp on how everything works than a few weeks ago. I've posted my captured photos on my flickr page so be sure to check it out. That's it for me tonight, maybe I'll write some more if I feel in the mood. One thing is for sure, I'm going to love having tomorrow off. Lounge day!

Another Song For You

Listening to: Jason Mraz - Selections For Friends Live Album
I recorded another song using guitar rig. It is very raw so try to ignore some of the mishaps that arise through the song. It's called Sorry, So Sorry by Howie Day. Enjoy!

Also,

HAPPY BIRTHDAY DAD!!!!

IT'S FINALLY SNOWING!!!

Listening to: Supergrass - Moving
The snow is falling harder and harder outside the office window! I can see a whirl of white flecks drifting to the ground. There's no hope of it sticking in this metropolis but it's still wonderful to look at! :) :) Just a little bit has raised my hopes of it actually being a real winter up here in NY. I can't wait for more!

Wow! Apple Instantly Converted Me

Listening to: Nine Days - Absolutely
Apple just announced their new iPhone. Check it out: http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/09/the-apple-iphone/.

Sweet, ridiculous, glorious specs of the 11.6 millimeter device (that's frickin' thin, by the way) include a 3.5-inch 480 x 320 touchscreen display with multi-touch support and a proximity sensor to turn off the sensor when it's close to your face, 4GB or 8 GB of storage and WiFi that automatically engages when in range. Most amazingly, it somehow runs OS X with support for Widgets, Google Maps, and Safari, and iTunes (of course).

Too bad it's $500 and not for verizon. :(

Back From California

Listening to: Bush - Glycerine
Before I give you an update, I've been wondering who really reads this... Can you do me a favor and leave a quick comment? It can be anything or even some default text like "Here's a comment for Gabe." It really motivates me to write more if I know people are reading what I've written. Thanks!!!!

I had a great vacation back home in Del Mar. It was really nice to get out of the city for a few weeks and breathe in the fresh coastal air. Oh how I missed it... But now I'm back in NYC where it's a shocking 30 degrees ABOVE what it's supposed to be. It was 68 degrees today in midtown...doesn't that seem wrong? Don't get me wrong, it's a nice temperature for any other time of year except winter. It's supposed to be freaking cold! Everybody is rejoicing that it's so warm but I really wanted it to be cold, dammit! I was waiting for that first snow in the city where everything turns white but NO, everything is f'ed up! It's too warm. I'm sick of the heat...I was in Texas for 4 years where it was abnormally warm pretty much all the time and now NY is warm too! I expected the northeast to be cold, so cold that I would complain about it being cold. Everyone I talk to says "the cold is coming, don't worry" but according to these articles, it ain't coming anytime soon and "the National Weather Service said that last month appeared to be the first December without a snowflake here since 1877, when Rutherford B. Hayes was president." Sigh...

Anyways, on to other topics that don't piss me off. I brought my electric guitar back from home and it's been such a pleasure to play it. Now it's like having a brand new guitar! I've been playing around with recording a few riff's here and there and have really been enjoying a program called Guitar Rig. It transforms the audio signal from my guitar into pretty much anything. It tons of presets for distortion, delay, tremolo...you name it, this program has it. To give you an example, I've recorded a favorite song of mine to play in two different modes: standard and powerflower. If you click on the following links, they should open up in a different window and play. If they don't play, then right click on each icon and click "Save Target as..." or "Save Link as..." and save it to your computer. From just trying them out, once they load, press pause and start them over. It gets jumbly in the beginning for some reason.

I've settled in a bit today by unpacking all my stuff and playing Daniella (my electric guitar). I used my new frying pan today and it was great! It cooked pretty evenly although it was much too big for only two eggs. I'll have to make three next time. It was so easy to clean too! It took literally 10 seconds! I'm also eager to use the waffle maker Michelle gave me. I bought an electric beater today so maybe I'll try waffles tomorrow morning! Michelle also gave me that zip car certificate that I have been thinking about using. I'm not sure when I'll sign up, but maybe when she comes back from break. I'm excited to drive and get outside of the city and maybe use that great ny hiking book my mom gave me (and of course my new, totally awesome camera!)

For all you picture fiends out there, don't worry, I took a lot of pictures in SD/LA and have uploaded them to my flickr account. Here are a couple of my favorites:
