I’ve been writing but not blogging, until now

I have been writing 100+ words almost every day for two months but I don’t make time to iterate on my writing and publish to Medium and my blog. Why?

The 100 words is a good, small habit to build to get words and thoughts out of my head every day. Sometimes I struggle but then usually stumble onto something from my day at work that I can reflect on and write about.

But most days what I write doesn’t feel publishable:

  • I don’t know if it’s coherent and would make sense to others outside of my head and without my context

  • It doesn’t have imagery which is important to me and is a minimum bar these days for any blog post

  • It usually doesn’t have links to other materials or references which Medium advises you to do

But maybe I’m setting the bar too high which means I’m not publishing anything and learning from it. Instead of having perfect blog posts, I could just write and publish what I have, like an MVP for a blog post. I can then iterate on it, get feedback and improve for posting a version 2.

Idea: MVP blog posts or MVBP’s

An idea came to mind: an MVP of a blog post, or Minimum Viable Blog Posts, as a way for me to publish quickly and learn from putting content out there for people to read. I’ll know it’s working when:

  • I feel good about the regularity I’m publishing and feel like I’m not holding back

  • It leads to me writing and publishing longer content more frequently

  • I get comments for the things I write

Ironically, I stumbled across this from Adrian Howard on “Can you do a shitty first draft?” which is pretty much what I’m thinking about with MVP blog posts. I’m feeling more motivated to get writing out there. The proof is in this post!
